Choosing Materials for Children's Spaces

In most interior projects, material selection happens near the end — a finish applied over a settled layout. In a children's play environment, it happens near the beginning, because the material itself has to survive contact a typical adult space never sees: mouths, falls, thousands of small hands gripping the same edge for years.

Durability here means something more specific than "hard-wearing." A surface has to resist abrasion from constant sliding and climbing, resist the introduction of splinters or sharp wear-edges as it ages, and remain dimensionally stable across the humidity and temperature swings of both indoor HVAC systems and outdoor installations. We test candidate materials against years of projected use, not months, because a playground that looks tired after one season has failed at its actual job.

Safety runs deeper than certification checklists, though those matter too — impact-attenuating flooring, rounded edges, non-toxic finishes are baseline requirements, not differentiators. The harder problem is designing for the ways children actually use a surface, which is rarely the way it was intended: a railing becomes a balance beam, a bench becomes a launch point. Material choices have to hold up under that real, unscripted use, not just the use shown in a rendering.

And then there's the sensory dimension, which is easy to underweight. Texture, temperature, and even sound — the acoustic softness of a padded surface versus the hard echo of tile — shape how safe and inviting a space feels to a child's still-developing sensory system, independent of how it looks in a photograph. A material palette chosen only for colour and visual coherence, without walking through how it feels under a bare foot or a falling hand, is an incomplete palette. Getting this right is slow, deliberate work — but it's the layer of a project that children actually touch.
